What is the difference between filler and fat injection?

Many patients get confused about filler and fat injection. Thus this question is frequently asked at our clinic as well.

So today, we will have a look at some advantages and disadvantages of filler and fat injection.

Fat injection (or Fat graft) is simply the relocation of the fat that we already have in our body. It is very weird that our face loses its volume when our thigh or stomach gets fatter. 

The fat used for fat injection is usually extracted from the inner thigh, and usually 1 or 2 stitches are remained there.

It is very important for the patient to have accurate discussion regarding the area and amount of fat injection with the surgeon, as fat injection surgery is done under deep sleep anesthesia.

Areas where fat injection is possible

-       Forehead, temple, front cheek, front chin, Sides of face

Fat grafting is usually done on relatively wider area, and narrow areas such as nose bridge, love bands and lips are not suitable for the fat injection.

Sometimes, PRP can be added into the fat extracted to increase the survival rate of injected fats.

It is ideal to get second session of fat injection as a touch up session in 2 months after the first surgery because some of injected fat gets absorbed back into our body.

Then what is filler injection?

Filler creates volume on our face with injection that contains hyaluronic acids which absorbs into our body and gets excreted as urine as time goes by. 

However it is important to get filler injection at authorized clinic with authentic products even when the filler injection is simple procedure, because the use of unauthentic product can lead to infection, relocation and it may not even disappear permanently as well.

Areas where filler injection is possible

-       Forehead, temple, front cheek, smile line (nasolabial fold), front chin, sides of face, love bands, nose bridge, lips and earlobe

As I have mentioned above, there are some differences between filler and fat injection while they are quite similar to each other.

However if you would just like to fill up 1~2 areas while you are scared of surgery, I would like to recommend filler injection.

On the other hand, if you have experienced filler injection before and would like to create more volume on your whole face, I would like to recommend fat injection rather than filler injection.
